Tech Notes: Wang Integrated Circuit Part Number Table

This document provides a cross-reference between Wang Labs internal Integrated Circuit part numbers and manufacturer part numbers. This information will be very useful to anyone that has an integrated circuit-based Wang calculator (700, 600, 500, 100, 400-series, and C-Series) that is in need of repair. In some cases, Wang Labs negotiated with their IC vendors to print only the Wang internal part number on components delivered to Wang, thus making it much more difficult for anyone other than Wang service personnel to perform chip-level diagnosis and replacement. This information is taken from a document entitled "Standards for IC Symbols" (Publication #03-00010-1), dated April of 1973. The document was created and edited by Wang Labs' Product Service Department for use by factory-based service personnel to repair circuit boards returned to the factory as defective.

Notes

Part numbers with 376 prefix are typically small and medium-scale DTL and TTL devices, with some analog devices mixed in.

377-prefix parts are RAM and ROM IC's.

378-prefix devices are exclusively programmed EPROM devices.

Part numbers not listed are either undefined, or for products that are unrelated to Wang's electronic calculators.

Circuit board numbers, where available, are also listed. The board number is Wang's internal circuit board assembly identification. In most cases, this identifier can be found etched into the circuit board as part of the nomenclature of the board. Only applicable on boards that have specific parts unique to the particular circuit board.

Where available, the calculator or peripheral model the part is associated with is listed. Only applicable on parts which have unique use for a specific model of calculator or peripheral.

Parts numbers listed as "Undefined" are not listed within the source document.

Where applicable, the logic family of the device is noted in brackets, e.g., [DTL]. Items without such designation are assumed to be TTL, or made clear by the item's function.

Parts with "See xxx-xxxx" are superceded by newer parts. See the referenced part number for more information.

Manufacturer part numbers are listed without prefix or postfix. Most of the small and medium-scale devices were available from a number of vendors, including Texas Instruments, Motorola, Signetics, Fairchild, Advanced Micro Devices, and National Semiconductor.

Manufacturer part numbers with "EA" prefixes are made by Electronic Arrays. These parts are custom Mask-Programmed ROMs used for firmware storage. It appears that in later production, Wang began using Intel 1702 PROMs, which could be programmed at Wang's factory rather than during IC fabrication at Electronic Arrays.
